Selling a business in Maryland
Maryland is where Maurant Ventures is based, and it is the market we review most closely. We look at established service businesses and operations with owned commercial property across the Baltimore metro, the I-95 corridor and the surrounding counties, and we buy as a principal rather than listing anything.

What we review here
- Trades and service fleets: mechanical, plumbing, electrical, restoration
- Industrial service and repair operations with a yard or shop
- Logistics and distribution near the port and the I-95 corridor
- Home and community-based service providers
- Operating businesses that own the building they work from
Maryland-specific items in a transaction
Transfer and recordation costs are county-level in Maryland and they are not trivial on a commercial building. They belong in the closing model from the beginning.
- State and county licensing for the trades, which varies by jurisdiction
- Recordation and transfer taxes on real property, which differ by county
- Environmental review on industrial and automotive sites, particularly older Baltimore parcels
- State registration and good standing filings with the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation
A note on presence
Maurant Ventures acquires businesses throughout the United States. Listing a market here means we actively review opportunities there. It is not a claim of a local office.
What Maurant needs to evaluate this
- Three years of tax returns and current financials
- Whether the operating property is owned, and by which entity
- County-level licensing and permits
- Customer concentration
- Existing debt and guarantees
When Maurant is not the right buyer
- Pre-revenue or concept-stage businesses
- Categories we do not underwrite, including restaurants and assisted living
Questions owners ask
- Do you only buy in Maryland?
- No. Maryland is our home market and we acquire throughout the United States.
- Do you buy the real estate?
- Where the operation depends on it, usually yes, on a separate financing leg.
